John is a qualified Metallurgist, with a degree and PhD from the University of Cambridge. He is also a Chartered Engineer and a Member of the Institute of Corrosion.

He spent seven years working for Corus plc, formerly British Steel, where he used his Metallurgical expertise to support new product development and to investigate the causes of quality problems during both processing and in-service. This was followed by a period as a full-time Lecturer in Materials and Quality Assurance at a Scottish College of Higher Education.

In 1991, John became a Business Consultant, and over a period of eight years developed an understanding of technologies, skills and strategies required by a successful materials and manufacturing industry.

He is currently a part-time lecturer in Manufacturing, Materials and Mechanical Engineering at Bradford College. He also devises and delivers industrial training courses for blue chip companies.

John has carried out several projects with the Centre for Materials Education, covering best practice in the accreditation of prior learning, work-based learning, and professional development skills.
