Most of the metallic elements possess one of three crystal structures:
- face-centred cubic (fcc)
- hexagonal close-packed (hcp)
- body-centred cubic (bcc).
This section looks at simple ways of packing atoms of the same size by treating them as hard spheres. The unit cells of fcc, hcp and bcc structures are shown and their different symmetries are investigated.
