This animation plots the density of states parabola and also shows the ideal case.

In the Fermi Sphere, we found:

N(E) = 4π/h3(2m)(2m) E

This implies that the density of states curve should be a parabola - click the 'Plot density of states curve' button opposite to view.

The number of electrons in the valence band determines how many of the possible states are actually occupied. We often show this by shading the filled part of the density of states curve. Click 'View Ideal Case' opposite to see the ideal case.

The highest energy electron in the band has energy Ef, the Fermi energy.
