The UK Centre for Materials Education and the LTSN Generic Centre are hosting a workshop for all members of the Learning and Teaching Support Network. The LTSN has been working hard to create a network of committed individuals for the past two years. Enthusiasts who care about teaching and learning. About students. About higher education as an integral part of our society. Understanding what it is that binds us together in this enterprise is essential to understanding ourselves as a community and not just a network of individuals.
Our network comprises many dedicated individuals who make many sacrifices and pour much emotional and physical energy into the enterprise in the hope and belief that it will make a difference to HE. Recent discussions within the subject centres and with generic centre staff have led to the realisation that despite many meetings to discuss content and process, we rarely find the occasion to consider the basis for our own motivation and commitment. Yet this is core to the success of the network. What causes us to leave our own homes and families and drive ourselves across the country, or spend endless hours waiting for trains, to meet one teacher who is interested in improving their teaching and their students' learning and experience? What motivates us to face walls of RAE defence barriers or the cynics who can make things very uncomfortable?
This and much more will be investigated at the workshop which will be held in the idyllic setting of Sutton Courtney Abbey, near Didcot in Oxfordshire. Accomodation, supper and entertainment will be provided on the evening of the 8th and the cost of attending will be £35. If you would like to attend or would like further information, please contact the UK Centre for Materials Education on 0151 794 5364 or at ukcme@liv.ac.uk.
