International Conference organised by Engineering Conferences International

5-9 April, 2004, Kona, Hawaii

Engineering Conferences International (ECI), the successor to the United Engineering Foundation, is a body devoted to organising international Workshops aimed at examining critical issues facing engineering on an international level. It has recognised the critical issues facing materials education and is supporting an international meeting to debate the issues. EPSRC has provided limited funding to support UK participation in this meeting (see below).

The main objective of this conference is to stimulate the exchange of information and ideas between engineers, scientists and educators on the future needs and trends in materials science and engineering education around the world. This conference will bring together the academic institutions that train the students, governmental agencies and industries that fund research and education for the students and industry that eventually employs the students. The theme of the conference is timely; national organisations throughout the world have been concerned with the mismatch of a declining student population and an increasing demand for well-qualified graduates. This conference will assemble representatives of all of the stakeholders in Materials Education.

The proposed conference will address all aspects of the future of materials science and engineering education including:

  • Student enrolment
  • Curriculum content and development
  • Novel teaching approaches
  • Employment opportunities and statistics
  • Relationship of student education to research activities
  • Course accreditation, professional body requirements and quality assurance.

Abstracts of contributions of papers relevant to the theme of the conference should be sent to Professor Gerhard Fuchs, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Florida (gfuch@mse.ufl.edu) and copied to Professor Malcolm McLean, Imperial College London (m.mclean@imperial.ac.uk). The allocation of financial support for attendance at the meeting will be contingent on a paper being accepted and the level will depend on the number of papers accepted for presentation. Requests for funding should be directed to Malcolm McLean. Further details of the conference are available at http://www.engconfintl.org/
