Symposium on
Education in Materials Science, Engineering and Technology

ICMAT – IUMRS/ICAM
Singapore, July 3-8, 2005

This symposium is to be held as part of the International Conference on Advanced Materials (IUMRS) and International Conference on Materials for Advanced Technologies (MRS-Singapore).

The event will comprise two elements: sessions on Advances in Materials Education that address a range of learning and teaching issues at all levels from school to undergraduate to postgraduate and beyond, as well as the subjects of public education and outreach activity; and a Discussion Forum intended to give delegates the opportunity to explore some of the overarching issues important to the future of our discipline.

Call for Papers

Abstracts are invited on the following topics and related areas:

Advances in Materials Education

  • New educational resource materials (e.g. textbooks, topical modules, software, demonstrations and labs, web based courseware);
  • Curriculum development and innovation;
  • Innovative approaches to learning, teaching and assessment;
  • Role of industry in materials education;
  • Community outreach activity.

Discussion Forum

  • Public education for the average citizen and scientific literacy in the community;
  • Elevation of discussion in public policy formation;
  • International academic collaboration (e.g. student and faculty exchange programs);
  • International recognition and accreditation of “Materials” as an academic discipline;
  • Teaching emerging new fields such as nano- and bio- materials.

Proceedings

Proceedings of the Symposium will be published as a special issue of the ‘International Journal of Materials Education’. Manuscripts should be submitted during the conference or earlier, and they will be subject to peer review.
