New and Recently Appointed Materials Lecturers' 2-day Workshop 2011

The UK Centre for Materials Education (UKCME) is once again organising a 2-day workshop for newly / recently appointed lecturers (ie academic staff who have commenced within the past 3 years) who teach aspects of Materials, either in courses or modules.

This UKCME workshop is focused fully on subject-specific approaches to teaching. It will be delivered by experienced Materials practitioners, with additional contributions from a number of academics teaching Materials who have successfully completed their probationary period.

Participating new lecturers from the workshop in September 2010 commented:

‘It was very useful to have a group from UKCME able to provide input to my teaching, something I can’t get from anywhere else.’

‘I was able to obtain strategies for coping with my teaching, which will save me valuable time this academic year. The Materials focus of the event was great. I was able to share ideas, resources and experiences.’

‘Attending this UKCME workshop was a very good use of my time. I was able to talk things over with people exactly in the same situation as me, who are also from the same subject area.’

The aims of the workshop are:

To help newly / recently appointed Materials academic staff address the main issues involved in providing a teaching session for students.
To consider, from a subject-specific perspective, aspects of the following:

course design
planning learning outcomes
choice of teaching methods
assessment of learning
evaluation of teaching
access to, and incorporation of, materials teaching resources

To offer new academic staff an opportunity to reflect on problems which students encounter in studying, and on ways in which lecturers can assist student learning.
To highlight solutions and support for learning and teaching available from the UK Centre for Materials Education.
To provide an opportunity for delegates to network with other newly / recently appointed Materials lecturers.

This workshop has been designed by UKCME to supplement accredited generic-based courses that all new academic staff from across an institution are normally required to undertake in their early years (for example, a certificate of academic practice, or a certificate of teaching in higher education). As an incentive, participation in the UKCME workshop may be used by delegates to gain credit towards certain elements of such generic-based courses when they return to their institutions.
