Materials Student Representatives’ Weekend 2005
11-13 November 2005
For the fifth consecutive year, the UK Centre for Materials Education ran a free residential weekend for a mixed group of Student Representatives studying Materials from across the UK. Those attending had been elected to represent their fellow students on university staff-student advisory meetings and committees.
The event took place in mid-November at an Outdoor Activity Centre in the heart of the Black Mountains National Park, in South Wales – voted by the Student Representatives to be a great location for both indoor and outdoor team-building tasks.
The purpose of the weekend, apart from having fun, was to help the students appreciate how best to contribute to meetings and represent the interests of their peers. The Student Representatives participated in a range of group-based activities focusing on the development of their learning, communication, listening and influencing skills. They also obtained information on the Materials industry, and everyone contributed to a mock Staff-Student Consultative Meeting using role-play.
Feedback from Student Representatives attending this year, and in previous years, is extremely positive. Students commented that they had been encouraged:
In summary, all agreed that they found the weekend to be highly interactive, stimulating and enjoyable, and would recommend this annual event to other Materials Student Representatives.
A selection of photographs of the weekend’s activities is posted here.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to a very successful event again this year.
