Many final year students in UK universities were asked, early in 2005,
to take part in a national survey of their attitudes to their programmes
of study.
The results can be found on the Teaching Quality Information (TQI) site (one click from www.hefce.ac.uk/news/hefce/2005/ss3.asp) while the questions are more deeply buried in Annex A of hefce publication 2004/33 (look under publications on the hefce site).
The bad news is that there are as yet no separate results for Materials students, who appear to be aggregated under 'Mechanically-based Engineering' (unless they are under 'Civil, Chemical and other Engineering', or even 'Physical Science'). We are trying to find out, and to gain access to a breakdown at true subject level.
The good news is that, on the whole, our students think we do a good job. The responses to the 22 questions in the survey are grouped under the headings 'Teaching', 'Assessment and Feedback', 'Academic Support', 'Organisation and Management', 'Learning Resources', 'Personal Development' and 'Overall satisfaction with the course'. The scores, on a scale of 1 (poor) to 5 (good) are mostly in the range 3.2 to 4.2, at least for engineering.
We will publish more details on this site as we find them.
