An online discussion of issues related to knowledge building and 'travelling facts' will be taking place for two weeks from Monday 11th February 2002, facilitated by Caroline Baillie and Jill Armstrong.

This discussion of 'travelling facts' follows the work undertaken by delegates at a knowledge development symposium held in September 2001. (A report on this event is available).

We would like to welcome those delegates and others who are interested in re-visiting the ideas after this period of reflection and engaging in a fortnight's discussion on current thinking and how we can move these ideas forward.

To begin picking up the threads of our thinking you can remind yourself about the event by reviewing the symposium report and associated documents.

At the end of the original symposium proposal, Caroline Baillie poses a series of questions, which are also listed below. These will be our starting point for this online discussion, but you are welcome to start your own threads in the spirit of knowledge development! We will also begin a discussion thread that looks at practical ways forward, such as events and papers.

If you would like to take part in this engaging discussion, please contact the UK Centre for Materials Education to receive instructions and login details.

Caroline's questions are:

  1. How does the scale, whether local or global, influence the process of transposition?
  2. What is being focussed on, the recipient, the donor, both, their differences or the new world created by their combination?
  3. Do we see the mechanism of transposition as an object, or as a concept that only appears under certain circumstances?
  4. Does the process of transposition have inherent value, or is it in fact only important when applied to certain contexts?

Caroline Baillie and Jill Armstrong

Dr Caroline Baillie is the Deputy Director of the UK Centre for Materials Education and is leading this knowledge development research on 'Travelling Facts'.

Jill Armstrong is a Senior Advisor at the LTSN Generic Centre, trying to keep up with Caroline and support all those wanting to move forward at the edge of their own understandings.
