The Special Educational Needs and Disability Act came into force in September 2002, and this will effect every university department and course to some degree.
Many sets of guidelines have been produced to help lecturers and course directors understand the implications of the Act. However, there is little practical guidance focussed specifically towards materials science courses and students.
We have already funded a study into the special needs of students with dyslexia to be carried out by Dr Adam Papworth.
This project will produce a set of guidelines to be distributed by the Centre. We would like to fund further studies of this type and feel a study into the special needs of materials students with visual impairment would be particularly valuable.
If you have an interest in this area and would like to be involved in such a project please contact our Centre Manager - Matt Murphy - by email at murphym@liv.ac.
