This project aimed to develop a resource box for home educating groups in Derbyshire, Staffordshire and surrounding areas. The resource consisted of a number of basic scientific experiments related to Materials science, as well as software and basic equipment like microscopes, stopwatches and general utility tools. The experiments were so designed as to provide activities for students in home-education ranging in age from 4 to 16 yrs. The kit also contained guidelines for parents to use the resources.

The resource pack was evaluated through informal feedback, but was not continued further. Some of the barriers in taking this project further were logistical, but there were also health and safety issues, particularly with respect to the use of the equipment contained in the resource kit. There was also the problem of communication, and loss of contacts when the people involved in the dissemination and implementation of this project amongst home-educating groups moved on to other things.
